The Back 2 Basics tutoring program is offered free-of-charge by the city of Rancho Cucamonga for grade school children who are struggling with reading or writing. Many are low-income who cannot afford professional tutors for their chidren. The groups are small and personal, typically no more than six children per tutor, and usually no more than two tutors per room, so they are able to get the personalized attention that they need. Workbooks are provided to the children with exercises to help enforce handwriting, as well as certain English grammatical rules. We also take turns reading books appropriate to their grade level to make sure they are able to keep up with their peers.

August 2011 – December 2011 (5 months)
Tutored small groups of 4th to 5th grade children in reading and writing twice weekly. A variety of lesson plans and reading material was provided, and I would go through a certain number of them with the students by the weekly deadlines.
A friend was part of the program, and convinced me to join. It was right after high school graduation, and I wanted to be able to add some thing else to my resumé as I was entering the job market.
My volunteer term ended. I did not re-enroll in order to more focus on college coursework.
